The world flexographic printing market and development (Part I)

recently, the relevant European authorities (EFTA/UK) published the survey data on the market scale of flexographic printing in the printing industry. According to the survey data, among various printing formats, flexo printing is the fastest growing one at present and in the next five years (Table 1 and figure 1). In particular, according to the forecast data (Table 2) on the worldwide share of flexographic printing by region, it has reached more than 70% in the United States, 30% in Europe, and the proportion of flexographic printing in Asia is higher than that in Japan

to sum up, the packaging industry in Europe, America and Japan has the same trend, And it will continue to develop in the future:

1) small batch and multi variety (design diversification)

2) timely production (reducing inventory and direct delivery)

3) product aesthetics (polychromatic trend)

4) regional purchase

Figure 2 packaging market in the United States (2000)

in terms of packaging and printing, the United States can be called "flexo printing kingdom". Its market is huge and its products are numerous (Figure 2). Especially in the field of flexible packaging, flexo printing is a cheap, fast and suitable means of production, which has been agreed in the United States. 70% of packaged products are printed by flexographic printing (Table 3). Representative flexo printing products include newspapers, cheap paperbacks (pocket books, magazines, etc.), wallpapers, gift wrapping papers, napkins, paper trays, paper cups, envelopes, letter labels, security cards, etc

the largest case printing market in the United States is corrugated printing (including pre press and post press processing), accounting for about 24% (US $29billion). The second fastest growing field is flexible packaging flexo printing, accounting for about 24% (US $20.4 billion), with an average annual growth rate of 3.5~4%. Carton flexo printing accounts for about 19.3% (US $16.5 billion)

fta (American Flexo Printing Association) published the growth rate of American flexo printing in 2002, that is, it will increase at an average annual rate of 4-5% in the future. From the demand of printing ink market, we can also see the rapid growth trend of flexo printing. Table 4 shows the change and forecast of ink demand for various printing methods in the United States. In the future, the largest demand growth is for digital printing ink, followed by flexo printing ink

flexographic printing seminars are held every year throughout the United States, and universities and specialized agencies are set up to take charge of regular sex education training. The foundation of flexo printing is very perfect, and there are many manufacturers of flexo printing machinery and equipment

2 European flexo printing market in 2000, offset printing accounted for 4%, flexo printing 32% and gravure printing 18% of European packaging printing methods. According to the growth forecast in 2005, flexo printing will reach the same scale as offset printing (Figure 3 and Figure 4). The product areas that will grow in the future include carton flexo printing (currently offset printing accounts for 70-80%, flexo printing accounts for 4-10%, gravure printing accounts for 15-20%) and flexible packaging flexo printing (currently case printing accounts for 60%). The proportions of different formats in packaging and printing are shown in Figure 3. According to the substrate, about 70% of flexo printing is used to print PE, OPP and other plastic film materials (Table 5). According to different packaging and printing purposes, the proportion of each format is shown in Table 6. The most promising growth is flexible packaging flexo printing. At present, 90% of corrugated paper and 10% of cartons are flexographic printing, the largest product market, but its growth rate is the highest, reaching 10332% of building engineering facing bricks. Countries with a large number of flexo printing enterprises in Europe include Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom (Table 7)

the development trends of European packaging and printing market in the past five years are listed as follows:

1) small batch trend of products

2) inventory reduction

3) short delivery period

4) the number of printing designs increased

5) improvement of printing quality requirements

6) increase of printing color number

7) diversification of substrates and increase of products

8) change of packaging performance (more beautiful effect)

9) increase in special packaging

based on this background, in order to develop flexo printing in the future, in addition to opening up the market and reducing costs, the following problems need to be solved:

1) simplify the printing process, shorten the cycle, and achieve timely production

2) shorten the replacement time of batch products; 4

3) improve the degree of automation (increase the printing machine with rapid replacement)

4) high efficiency of prepress process (CTP → CTS)

5) promotion of standardization

6) improve the level of talents through education and training
